Roasting coffee beans is a specific process with a seemingly infinite range of possible outcomes in terms of flavour, aroma and colour. The roasting of green coffee beans changes their flavour to the one desired by the roaster. Coffee roasts are normally described by the colour of the bean they produce: light, medium or dark.
Roasting is the most important stage in coffee production and can be the make or break of a good cup of coffee. Roasting is when the hard work of the coffee farmer is celebrated. Our skilled coffee roasters select the green coffee beans and blend and roast them to perfection.
Coffee beans are cultivated in about 70 countries around the world, close to the Equator. Coffee is grown in South & Central America, Africa and Asia. Arabica beans account for about 60% of the coffee beans produced and sold worldwide, and Robusta beans for about 40%.
It’s important to remember that coffee beans are sensitive to light and heat. That’s why coffee should be kept in and stored in a cool, dark place like your fridge in an opaque brown bag or an airtight container. The longer your beans sit out, or the more exposure they have to those conditions, the more flavour they’ll lose.
